I am so glad that I was introduced to Tarot cards by an acquaintance. Before her I thought that Tarot was used to see the future and that was the only purpose. I think this is a common misconception. After meeting the above mentioned person, I realized Tarot is so much more. Tarot cards are a tool for self discovery, foremost.
It is recommended that those who are interested in Tarot choose a pack that suits them and then studies and "meditates" on each card (more about meditation in a future post). One book that I was using to study the cards, suggested imagining myself walking into the scene on each of the Major Arcana cards and letting it unfold, seeing where my imagination took me. All this intuitive wisdom I wasn't aware of, began to unravel within that practice. The process of studying the deck takes a while, but its worth the journey, as each card reveals something(s) about yourself. Then once you have gotten to know the pack (and a lot about yourself), its really fun and useful to ask questions and pull cards to help answer them. The deck I use is the Rider-Waite deck (shown in pic). There are a lot of books about that deck so its a good place to start.
Here is a free PDF about how to learn Tarot. Enjoy!
